EV chargers

Charge at home, on your own sunshine

A smart home charger on a proper dedicated circuit, set up to fill the car from spare solar or the cheap overnight rate.

The job

What a home charger install involves

A 7 kW charger needs its own circuit from your consumer unit, its own protective device and, depending on your supply, earthing arrangements of its own. We check the fuse board and the supply capacity first, and tell you in the quote if the board needs upgrading.

Smart chargers can be set to use only spare solar, to charge on an off-peak window, or to do both. With a battery in the house as well, we set the priorities so the car doesn't drain the home battery unless you want it to.

Tell us about

  • Where the car parks and how far that is from the fuse board
  • Whether you have, or plan, solar and a battery
  • Your electricity tariff, if you're on an EV or off-peak one
  • Any shared drive, flat or rented home, which can affect grants

FAQ

EV charger questions

Can I run my EV charger from my solar?

Yes. A smart charger can be set to charge only when you have spare solar, or to top up on a cheap overnight tariff, or both. It needs a compatible charger and an energy meter clamp, which we fit as part of the job.

Do I need a dedicated circuit?

Yes. A home charger needs its own circuit from the consumer unit and usually a new protective device. If your fuse board is old or full, that may need upgrading first, and we'll say so in the quote.

Is there a grant for home chargers?

Grants for home chargers are now limited to specific situations, such as renters and flat owners with off-street parking. We'll tell you if you qualify.
